Winner of the Day: Welfare Reform

Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker toured the state yesterday promoting a new welfare reform package that will be included in the state budget: work requirements for adults receiving Foodshare assistance, more vocational training for the state’s incarcerated population and occupational license reform. The legislature will need to take a long look at some of the proposals, but overall the package is moving the state in the right direction, and that makes welfare reform the winner of the day.

Industrial Hemp: A Win-Win For The Economy And The Environment

Industrial hemp was once a dominant crop on the American landscape. This hardy and renewable resource (one of the earliest domesticated plants known, with roots dating back to the Neolothic Age in China) was refined for various industrial applications, including paper, textiles, and cordage.

Over time, the use of industrial hemp has evolved into an even greater variety of products, including health foods, organic body care, clothing, construction materials, biofuels, plastic composites and more (according to one source, more than 25,000 products can be made from hemp).

In the U.S., the first hemp plantings were in Jamestown, Virginia, where growing hemp was actually mandatory. From then on hemp was used in everything from 19th century clipper ship sails to the covers of pioneer wagons. The Declaration of Independence was drafted on hemp paper, and even the finest Bible paper today remains hemp-based.

These Are The Celebrities Who Vowed To Leave America If Trump Wins

Used to dramatic theatrics even if many of them sounded dead serious, dozens of celebs vowed over the last few months to depart the US if Donald Trump won the White House, saying they’d buy a one way ticket to everywhere from Canada to Jupiter. And perhaps some of them planned on carrying through on their threat: overnight Canada’s immigration website crashed from heavy traffic after it became clear that Trump would win.

The question, however, now is how many of these provocateurs will be true to their word, especially in a world in which long-held conventions just got slammed overnight: how many of these so-called starts will make good on their promise?
